Trading since May 1980, Schooling Builders was formed by Mike & Trish Schooling. Mike started a career in Building for a London firm of Quantity Surveyors, over the years he built up his skills on site, a Surveyor by trade, Mike is also skilled in areas of carpentry. Mike and his family moved to Bristol where he gained the position of Site Manager for Beazers South West, predominanetly a house builder. Mike finally moved to Teignmouth in 1977 as Area Manager for Beazers and into one of their Beazer built homes, he then set up Schooling Builders 3 years later in 1980.
With one sub contractor and himself (Mike). Contracts were mainly on the Exeter Trading Estates. From there they gained a good reputation and went on to carry out contracts with MAFF (now DEFRA), NHS and local authorities filling the gaps with Design & Build projects where Mike produced hand drawn plans for clients. When the recession hit the business in the late 80’s, early 90’s they cut the team back and continued to work through carrying out mainly residential works. The company joined Constructionline in 1991, and have been part of their Pre Qualification checks for the Public Sector since.

The company became a Limited Company in June 2003, this action propelled the Company into earning accreditations and endorsements. Their first recognition in 2004 by gaining a Gold Certification showing over 75% of their workforce were CSCS carded.
2004 saw Emma join the team, Mike and Trish took part in a Management Workshop which encouraged them to take on Investor in People accreditation. These years also saw the office finally move out of the family home to Broadmeadow, a Highly Commended Award at the Specialist Contractor Awards in London, the launch of their website and Mike gaining a SMSTS qualification.
The refurbishment sector grew within the company during 2007 with the team expanding to its biggest yet of 18 directly employed team, and working in 14 schools over the Summer Holiday. 2008 saw the Introduction of a Quality Management System, and regular use of e tendering. The company also won a Training award through the FMB for South West Region.
This year saw us carry out our biggest contract to date. We were also accreditedfor the first time by Exeter City Council and gained 'Superior Status' on their Green Accord scheme. We started an Environmental Management System,and had our 3rd Investor in People review, where the standard was upheld. Ben Ward was promoted to Site Manager. In 30 years the only other Site Manager the company has had is Mike Schooling.
Company History
Runners up in the years SW FSB Award for Environmental Responsibility. Emma & Trish celebrated 30 years in business by doing the Midnight Walk in Torbay raising funds for Macmillan & Rowcroft. 1st year results of our Environment System show decreased fuel, water, energy, we also halved our General Construction Waste to Landfill.
Workloads to end of 2010 very high.
